Control is a starting point
When your files live on a drive you own, you choose where the hardware sits, who has an account and when access is removed. That reduces dependency on a public storage provider for the primary copy. It does not make the setup automatically secure. A weak password, old firmware or an exposed remote connection can undo the benefit quickly.
The security checklist that matters
- Unique credentials: use a strong, unique password for the storage admin account. Never leave defaults in place.
- Individual accounts: give each person their own access rather than one shared login.
- Software updates: install device and app updates promptly, especially security fixes.
- Secure remote access: use encrypted, authenticated access; do not casually expose a file-sharing port to the open internet.
- Least privilege: a guest should not be able to browse every folder just because they need one album.
- Backups: protect against accidental deletion, hardware failure, theft and ransomware with a separate copy.
Physical security still counts
Put the device somewhere stable, dry and not easily removed. A locked room is useful, but a simple power outage can also interrupt access. If a drive contains sensitive information, consider encryption at rest when the hardware and your recovery plan support it. Keep recovery codes and backup-drive labels somewhere safe, not only on the drive itself.
Review access like you review spare keys
Once every few months, look at the accounts that can reach the storage. Remove old devices and accounts, check that backups still run, and make sure household members know where important files are. Security is most effective when it fits normal life rather than becoming a task everyone postpones.
