Give the library a real home
A phone is a camera, not a long-term archive. And a cloud plan is convenient until the library outgrows its free tier, gets split across several accounts or becomes another subscription that nobody reviews. A dedicated drive gives the family archive a physical home. A private storage hub makes that home easier to reach from the phones and laptops where new photos begin.
Organise for the people who will inherit the folder
Keep the structure boring and obvious. A folder per year, then events or months, is easy to navigate later. Use names such as 2026-07-grandma-birthday, not “New folder (4).” Keep originals where possible and export edited copies separately. The future version of you—and relatives who are not the family tech support—will be grateful.
Sharing without surrendering the whole archive
Private storage does not mean shutting everyone out. It means making sharing intentional. Give family members their own access where possible, share selected folders for an event, and avoid circulating one permanent password. A shared home storage hub can be more personal than a trail of compressed images in chat groups.
Do not confuse storage with backup
Photos deserve the 3-2-1 mindset: three copies, on two types of storage, with one copy away from home.
